D60 is the third incarnation of the compact , wqzxc the Nikon SLR line of user-friendly entry-level that began back in 2006 with the D40 ( which replaced the first Nikon models ' beginner ' , D50 ) . The original D40 camera and Nikon's very important to be given much of the credit for the revival in fortunes at the end of the volume Nikon SLR market ( which has been totally dominated by Canon since the launch of the EOS 300D / Digital Rebel ) .

The success of the D40 ( which wqzxc continued long after the D40X made a quick appearance is just 6 months later ) is not difficult to explain , but keenly priced , well designed and constructed and capable of excellent results . It was also a camera wqzxc that proved cameras do not sell on megapixels alone ( even at launch 6MP resolution is far from ' class-leading ' ) .
The D40x , which is positioned as a premium wqzxc alternative rather than a replacement for the D40 , do not mess with the formula at all , a new sensor with more ( ten ) megapixels and a lower base ISO , plus a slightly higher continuous shooting rate .
D60 is a direct replacement for the D40x ( D40 will wqzxc stay around for a while as a budget option Nikon ) , and once again it was not a major upgrade , the sensor remains the same ( although it now has a dust reduction system ) and external design is almost identical . There are several new features , including the same EXPEED processing ' concept ' which looks at the D3 / D300 , Active D - Lighting , an eye sensor ( to control the screen display ) , and some tweaks to the interface , but perhaps the most significant change is not for the camera altogether, moving to the stable version of the kit lens optics .
As with the D40 and D40x , D60 does not have wqzxc a motor new built-in focus drive , which means it can auto focus only with lenses that have their own drive motor ( AF - S and AF lenses - I) . Lack of drive motor can be seen by the missing mechanical focus drive pin on the lens mount ( see picture below ) . One new feature that the D60 is an electronic rangefinder to help focus the lens manually on non- AF - S / AF -I .
